Max Verstappen secured his fourth Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, solidifying his place among the sport’s elite. The Dutch driver, known for his skill and consistency, overcame a season of unexpected challenges to achieve this milestone.
Verstappen entered the Las Vegas race needing only to finish ahead of his closest rival, McLaren’s Lando Norris, to claim the title with two races remaining. Starting in fifth place on the grid, Verstappen maintained his position throughout the race, finishing fifth and comfortably ahead of Norris, who placed sixth. This result sealed his championship victory, placing him in an exclusive group of drivers with four or more world titles, alongside legends such as Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton.
Reflecting on his achievement, Verstappen expressed gratitude and pride over the team’s perseverance. “What a season. Four titles. Thank you to everyone. It was more challenging than last year, but we stayed strong and gave it everything,” he said over the team radio after the race.
Unlike the previous two seasons, where Verstappen and Red Bull dominated with unparalleled performance, this year presented a different narrative. Red Bull started the season strongly, with Verstappen winning seven of the first ten races. However, the team’s momentum waned mid-season as rivals like McLaren and Ferrari closed the performance gap. Verstappen managed only one win in the subsequent 12 races, yet his early-season success and relentless consistency ensured his points lead remained unassailable.
“It’s been a long season,” Verstappen admitted. “We started off incredibly strong, but then faced tougher competition. As a team, we worked through the challenges, kept improving, and stayed focused. I’m proud of how we handled everything.”
Lando Norris, who had mounted a strong campaign, commended Verstappen’s performance. “Max is relentless. Even when he doesn’t have the fastest car, he’s always there, pushing and making things difficult for everyone else. He deserved this title.”
While Verstappen celebrated his championship, the Las Vegas Grand Prix belonged to Mercedes. George Russell secured a commanding win after starting from pole position, marking his third career victory and his second of the season. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, charged from tenth on the grid to finish second, completing a one-two finish for Mercedes. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz claimed the final podium spot in third.
“It’s been an incredible weekend,” Russell said. “To get pole, win the race, and have a one-two finish with Lewis in such a spectacular location is a dream come true.”
The race, held under the dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip, delivered excitement both on and off the track. With overtakes and battles throughout the field, fans were treated to a showcase of racing drama, set against the vibrant backdrop of one of the world’s most famous cities.
With the drivers’ championship settled, the focus shifts to the Constructors’ Championship. McLaren currently leads the standings, followed by Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes. The final two races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi will determine which team claims the prestigious team title.
As the 2024 season winds down, Verstappen’s triumph serves as a testament to his talent and resilience. His ability to adapt to challenges and deliver under pressure has cemented his reputation as one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history. Looking ahead, Verstappen has already set his sights on a fifth title, aiming to continue his legacy in the pinnacle of motorsport.
