Last Saturday (12/23/23), Russian President Vladimir Putin stated he is open to cease-fire discussions in Ukraine. Putin’s intentions were conveyed via multiple news media sources.
The Russian President was proposing to recognize Ukraine’s sovereignty with Kyiv as the capital. However, Russia is willing to propose the deal if they’re allowed to keep approximately 20 percent of the Ukrainian territory.
Putin’s cease-fire attempt might be a way of manipulating Ukraine and the West. Per dozens of interviews conducted before Putin’s comments were made public, Russians who know Putin, including multiple international officials do not believe Putin is being sincere. Most of the officials deem the efforts as Putin’s way of reducing risks and keeping his options open.
Ukraine has been rallying support from the West and other allies in a peace formula. Ukraine wants the Kremlin to surrender all captured territories and pay incurred damages/losses. On Tuesday (12/26/23) Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he does not think or see Russia wanting to negotiate.
Even after the cease-fire comments were made public, the Ukraine Air Force claimed that Russian Forces launched attacks on the southern parts of Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Moscow launched 15 missiles of which 14 were shot down minimizing casualties. Be that as it may, authorities in the southern region of Kherson claimed that three people were killed and eight wounded by the recent missile attack.
On December 14th, Putin claimed that Russia’s goals remain unaltered. Putin further said that there would be no cease-fire until they have achieved their objectives.
