On April 6, 2026, the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball beat the UConn Huskies men’s basketball 69–63 in the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium. The win gave Michigan its second national championship and ended UConn’s chance at three in a row.
The game wasn’t very high scoring. Both teams had a hard time getting shots to fall, and there were a few stretches where it felt like nothing was going in. Three-point shooting didn’t really help either team. Because of that, even early possessions felt like they mattered more than usual.
Michigan didn’t win because they were shooting great. They mostly stayed in control by doing the basics well. Free throws were a big part of it since they went 25 for 28. That helped a lot considering how many shots they missed. Their defense also held up, and they didn’t give UConn many easy looks. They played at a steady pace and didn’t try to rush.
Elliot Cadeau led the team with 19 points and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. He wasn’t doing anything flashy, but he stayed consistent. Late in the game, he made smart decisions and helped keep things under control.
Yaxel Lendeborg scored 13 points and kept playing even while dealing with an injury. He stayed involved on both ends and didn’t really back off from contact. Morez Johnson Jr. had a double-double and helped a lot with rebounds, which mattered in a game like this where scoring was limited.
For UConn, Alex Karaban had 17 points and 11 rebounds. He kept them in the game when the offense wasn’t working that well. Tarris Reed Jr. added some points inside too, but overall the team just couldn’t get enough scoring when they needed it.
The second half stayed close the whole time. Neither team pulled away, and it felt like it could go either way. UConn had a few chances late but missed some important shots. Michigan didn’t build a big lead, but they also didn’t lose control.
At the end, Michigan slowed things down and focused on holding the ball. That forced UConn to foul, and Michigan kept making free throws. UConn tried to answer quickly, but missed shots and not having much time left made it hard to catch up.
The stats kind of explain the game. Michigan shot around 38 percent, and UConn was just over 30 percent. Neither team shot well.
The win gave Michigan its first national title since 1989 and finished the season under head coach Dusty May. Throughout the tournament, they found ways to win even in games where the offense wasn’t great.
The game was shown on TBS and other Turner networks. After it ended, fans in Ann Arbor and across Michigan celebrated the championship.Michigan Wins NCAA Men’s National Championship, Beats UConn 69–63
