Surveillance footage captures the moment a Tesla Cybertruck explodes outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on January 1, 2025, injuring seven people and sparking an ongoing investigation.

A tragic explosion occurred early Wednesday outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, where a Tesla Cybertruck packed with explosive materials detonated, killing the driver and injuring seven others. Authorities are treating the incident as a possible act of terrorism, though investigations remain ongoing.

The explosion took place around 8:40 a.m., just hours after a separate deadly truck attack in New Orleans claimed 15 lives. Both incidents involved rented vehicles, prompting investigators to examine possible connections. However, law enforcement officials have emphasized that no definitive link between the two events has been established at this stage.

The driver of the Cybertruck, believed to be Matthew Alan Livelsberger, was a highly decorated U.S. Army Green Beret. Authorities revealed that Livelsberger died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound just before the explosion. Found in the aftermath were two firearms, fireworks, fuel canisters, and other materials, which investigators believe were intended to amplify the blast’s impact. The explosion, however, was largely contained within the truck, thanks to the vehicle’s steel design, minimizing damage to the hotel and surrounding area.

Livelsberger, 37, had recently returned to the United States from an assignment in Germany and was on leave in Colorado at the time of the incident. While the driver’s remains have yet to be conclusively identified through DNA testing, a military ID, passport, and credit cards found in the vehicle strongly suggest his involvement. Neighbors in Colorado Springs described Livelsberger as a family man who gave no indication of posing a danger.

Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill and FBI officials held a press conference to address public concerns. Sheriff McMahill stated that there is no immediate threat to the Las Vegas community, describing the explosion as an “isolated incident.” The FBI has also ruled out any confirmed ties between Livelsberger and international terrorist organizations, though investigations are ongoing to determine a potential motive.

The Cybertruck had been rented in Colorado and tracked through multiple charging stations en route to Las Vegas. Surveillance footage confirmed that Livelsberger drove the vehicle alone, dispelling early concerns of additional suspects. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has been closely involved in supporting the investigation, provided video evidence from charging stations to aid law enforcement.

The timing and location of the explosion—at the Trump International Hotel—have sparked questions about potential ideological motives. Sheriff McMahill acknowledged the need to explore every possibility, stating, “There’s lots of questions that we have to answer as we move forward.”

This incident comes in the wake of another deadly event in New Orleans, where a truck driver rammed into a crowd on Bourbon Street. The driver, identified as Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, was shot and killed by police after the attack. While both attackers had military backgrounds and rented vehicles from the same car-sharing platform, authorities have found no overlap in their service records or any evidence linking the two events.

The explosion in Las Vegas caused minor injuries to seven bystanders but did not significantly damage the Trump International Hotel. Guests were evacuated and relocated to nearby accommodations as authorities worked to secure the scene.

President-elect Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, both prominent figures associated with the hotel and vehicle, respectively, have expressed condolences for the victims and support for the investigation. Musk emphasized that the Cybertruck itself was not at fault for the explosion, attributing the blast to the fireworks and fuel canisters carried in its bed.

As the investigation unfolds, officials remain committed to uncovering the circumstances leading up to this event. In the meantime, heightened security measures have been implemented across major Trump properties and in public areas throughout Las Vegas.
