Georgia delivered a statement performance on Saturday, defeating Alabama 28 to 7 in the SEC Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The victory gave the Bulldogs their second consecutive conference title and positioned them to earn a top four seed and first round bye in the expanded 12 team College Football Playoff.
Coming into the game ranked third nationally, Georgia relied on an efficient offense and a disciplined, physical defense to control the matchup from the opening quarter. Quarterback Gunner Stockton set the tone early, leading an opening touchdown drive that put the Bulldogs in front and established a rhythm they would maintain for much of the night. Stockton finished with three touchdown passes and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after completing 20 of 26 attempts and adding productive yards on the ground.
Georgia steadily built its advantage over the first three quarters, scoring once in each period and stretching the lead to 21 to 0 before Alabama reached the end zone. The Bulldogs mixed short, controlled passes with a steady ground attack, keeping Alabama’s defense off balance and converting key red zone opportunities. Stockton connected with multiple receivers throughout the evening, helping the offense maintain momentum while avoiding turnovers.
Defensively, Georgia delivered one of its most complete performances of the season. The Bulldogs limited Alabama’s running game, disrupted passing lanes and maintained consistent pressure in the backfield. Their efforts held Alabama scoreless until the fourth quarter and prevented the Crimson Tide from sustaining drives. Alabama managed its only touchdown on a 23 yard pass early in the final period, but by that point the result was no longer in doubt.
Alabama entered the game ranked inside the national top ten, but the Crimson Tide were unable to generate the explosive plays that had defined their offense throughout the season. The Georgia defense contained Alabama’s passing attack, applied pressure at the line of scrimmage and forced the Tide into several long yardage situations that stalled drives. Although Alabama mounted a late push, Georgia closed the door with a fourth quarter stop to preserve its three score advantage.
For Georgia, the victory marks another significant milestone under head coach Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs have become one of the nation’s most consistent programs in recent years, and Saturday’s win adds a second straight SEC trophy to a growing list of accomplishments. The win also carries added weight given Georgia’s history in the conference championship; prior to last season, the Bulldogs had struggled in title matchups against Alabama.
Now 12 and 1, Georgia enters the postseason as one of the clear favorites to contend for the national championship. The Bulldogs are expected to receive a first round bye in the College Football Playoff and advance directly to the quarterfinals on New Year’s week.
Alabama, meanwhile, falls to 10 and 3 and must wait for the CFP selection committee’s decision to see whether its overall résumé will be strong enough to earn an at large berth.
The SEC Championship reinforced what Georgia has demonstrated all season: balance, depth and a level of execution that leaves the Bulldogs firmly in the national title conversation as the playoff begins.
