A U.S. Air Force officer has been rescued after going missing when his F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iran, ending a tense search that lasted nearly two days. The recovery followed a large military effort that involved aircraft, special operations forces, and intelligence teams working together to locate and extract the airman.
The jet, which had a two-person crew, was brought down over southwestern Iran on Friday. The pilot was able to eject and was rescued not long after the crash. The second crew member, a weapons systems officer and colonel, remained missing, leading to an urgent search in a remote and mountainous area.
U.S. officials said the officer managed to survive while hiding in difficult terrain and avoiding Iranian forces and local groups that were also searching for him. He had limited equipment and relied on staying out of sight until help could reach him.
President Donald Trump confirmed Sunday that the officer had been found and safely removed from the area. He said the mission required coordination across different parts of the military and support from intelligence agencies. The officer was injured but was taken to Kuwait for treatment and is expected to recover.
The rescue effort faced several challenges. During earlier attempts to recover personnel, U.S. aircraft came under fire. A helicopter carrying the rescued pilot was hit by small arms fire but was still able to land safely. An A-10 aircraft involved in the mission was also damaged, forcing its pilot to eject before being picked up.
As time went on, the search focused more closely on locating the missing officer. Intelligence teams used tracking and surveillance tools to narrow down his position. Officials also used misleading information to create confusion about his location, which helped reduce the risk of interference during the rescue.
Once his position was confirmed, U.S. commandos moved in with air support. Military officials said the operation included protective fire to keep opposing forces away while the team reached the officer. Reports indicate there was fighting during the extraction, which caused delays and extended the mission into daylight hours.
There were also logistical issues during the operation. Two transport planes could not be used to leave a remote base, so U.S. forces destroyed them to prevent capture. Replacement aircraft were sent in, allowing all personnel involved in the mission to leave Iranian airspace safely.
Iranian authorities were also searching for the downed airman and had asked civilians to help locate him. Reports suggested that armed individuals were moving through the area and may have fired at U.S. aircraft. Some claims about damage to American equipment have not been confirmed by U.S. officials.
The incident comes during a period of rising tensions in the region, with ongoing military activity and effects on global energy markets. It also marks a rare case of a U.S. fighter jet being shot down in combat in recent years.
The successful recovery prevented the officer from being captured, which could have added further tension to the situation. The mission shows how difficult and risky it can be to carry out rescue operations in hostile areas.Final Crew Member Rescued After U.S. F-15E Fighter Jet Shot Down in Iran
